Knives and Sharpening

I could never find a blade shaped the way I wanted it or a handle that fit my hand, so converting a pocket knife into a whittling knife evolved over several years. I first started reshaping blades of various kinds of lock blade knives, but soon found out that my hand grew tired of holding a handle that didn't fit. I then started experimenting with handles. Little by little and dozens of trials and errors, I finally had a collection of knives that would whittle anything I wanted to whittle.

I grew up when carbon steel blades were all there was, so I am still partial to them. However, the stainless steel blades available now are very good.

When making knives, I like the blade to be no longer than 1 &fraca4;". Some of the smaller blades are only ½:" long and 1/8" wide. Some things require round points and other projects need sharp points. .....

..... If it breaks your heart to encase your knife in wood, never to be seen again as it did mine, I have a solutions. A see through handle - shown in Fig. #30. .....

..... This section deals with sharpening.....
